"One of the value picks of the Médoc...91 points."Jane Anson, Decanter, April 2019
Is this the best ever Beaumont? In a word, yes. Released this morning, hot on the heels of Angélus yesterday, this is always a favourite Haut Médoc Cru Bourgeois, but this year we were particularly thrilled by the quality of the cask samples we tasted. With smoky, succulent fruit and fine tannins the 2018 has a wonderful energy and balance to offer at an exceptional price level.
With the same owners as Lagrange and Beychevelle, this is one of the larger Cru Bourgeois vineyards. The free-draining sandy and gravel soils here became very dry during the hot summer. The result was just the right amount of water stress ('hydric stress' to the cognoscenti!) inducing the vines to turn all of their energy away from producing foliage and into small, concentrated berries.
The ripeness of the tannins in the Cabernet Sauvignon, the full-fruited Merlot with its own silky tannins and the fresh acidity of the Petit Verdot have produced a winning combination. On the evidence of our tasting, this is a Beaumont with a long life ahead of it, but with approachability too. The finest cask samples we have tasted here, we recommend adding several cases to your cellar.
