Brilliant Burgundy: Gevrey-Chambertin & Morey-St.-Denis

We're lucky to have secured a small parcel of excellent red Burgundy from Domaine Tortochot, including wines both for immediate drinking and to cellar.

A small doorway in the Rue L'Eglise in the heart of the village of Gevrey leads to this traditional domaine, family-owned since the 19th century.  Chantal Tortochot is in charge and has a lifetime of knowledge of the terroirs here.  She converted the domaine to organic viticulture in 2013 and balances innovation with retaining a pleasingly traditional style.  Dark fruited, unmistakably Cote de Nuits wines but with fine, elegant tannic structure.

The Morey St Denis 2015 is for drinking now, layered with dark fruits and supple tannins.  The Morey 1er Cru Les Charmes bears more ageing and the 2012 is just nearing its peak, with a complex bouquet beginning to develop.

The Gevrey Les Corvees is from the superb 2015 vintage and is for laying down; but already shows a powerful, earthy structure on the palate.

From the equally superb but tiny 2016 vintage we have managed to get our hands on a sizeable chunk of Gevrey 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques.  Just next door to the famous Clos St Jacques 1er Cru - usually thought of as equal to many Grand Cru sites - Lavaux St Jacques is influenced by the cool nightime breezes which funnel down the Combes de Lavaux cliffs.  Full and muscular, this is a Gevrey with great aging potential.

Offered in bond and immediately available.

2015 Morey St Denis, Domaine Tortochot

Open on the nose with bright redcurrant notes followed by darker blackcurrant and kirsch notes, with the kirsch continuing on to the palate.  Fine and ripe tannins, fleshy but still fresh.  Drinking now and at peak over the next couple of years.  RKL

2012 Morey St Denis 1er Cru Aux Charmes, Domaine Tortochot

Fine fruit aromas with early signs of development.  Candied rhubarb aromas on the nose, with raspberry and kirsch fruits on the palate.  Instense and very long with great development contributed the tannins and a spicy warmth, a notable step up in length from the village level wine. RKL

"The “Aux Charmes” is initially quite reticent on the nose, but it opens nicely with attractive floral scents: dried rose petals, hints of bergamot and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied, succulent and surprisingly fleshy on the entry. This blossoms beautifully in the glass and represents a distinct level up in quality over the village cru thanks to its superior weight and presence, though it has more to give with three or four years in bottle. This comes recommended – a delicious Morey Saint Denis. Drink 2016-2025.  91 points" Neal Martin, Robert.Parker.com

2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 'Les Corvees', Domaine Tortochot

A step change in style from the more voluptuous Morey's, firmer and with more earthy minerality and powerful tannic structure.  Layered on the nose and quite serious for a village wine.  The tannins are super-ripe, powerful and elegant. Closed on nose and palate at present, 1-2 years more needed for the fruit to open out and balance its powerful structure. Drink 2020 onwards. RKL

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques, Domaine Tortochot

"Ripe red cherry fruit – really pure and juicy. Expressive, broad and chewy on the palate, with equal portions of flavour intensity, tannin and acidity – everything in balance, but still very youthful, of course, and will doubtless intermingle with time.17.5 pts" jancisrobinson.com (RH)
