Our offer of red burgundy from Domaine Tortochot last autumn was extremely popular and the wines sold quickly; so much so that we have worked hard to chase down some more.
In this parcel we have additional wines from the superb 2016 vintage, including a small quantity of the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin, scored 18.5 points by Richard Hemming MW for jancisrobinson.com.
Chantal Tortochot runs the domaine, founded by her great grandfather in the nineteenth century. Her father sold everything to negociants, but Chantal saw the potential for domaine bottling and focused on quality. Converting to organic viticulture in 2013, she balances innovation with a traditional style. The wines are dark-fruited and unmistakably Côte de Nuits in style, with a fine, elegant tannic structure which takes you right back to your earliest notions of how burgundy 'ought' to taste.
The Morey St Denis 2015 is already drinking beautifully, layered with dark fruits and supple tannins, whereas the Gevrey 'Les Corvees' 2015 needs a further year or so, but already shows a powerful, earthy structure on the palate.
In this new parcel we have managed to lay our hands on the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 'Champerrier', from a tiny 0.46 hectare parcel of sixty year old vines right in the heart of Gevrey itself.
The premier cru Lavaux St Jacques is next door to the famous Clos St Jacques - usually thought of as equal to many Grand Cru sites. Influenced by the cool nightime breezes which funnel down the Combes de Lavaux cliffs, the 2016 'Lavaux' is full and muscular, a Gevrey with great ageing potential.
Finally, you will need to be quick to secure a some of the Mazis-Chambertin 2016, with its intense minerality and profound length - a grand cru at a (top) premier cru price.
Offered in bond and immediately available.
