2017 Burgundy En Primeur Offer: Louis Jadot

Our first tastings of the 2017 Burgundy vintage from cask took place during November in London and on a visit to the Cote d'Or last week.  On first acquaintance, these are delicious wines which practically leap out of the glass and demand to be enjoyed.

The challenge for wine writers and the trade will be to persuade you that drinkability does not (in this case) equate with any lack of seriousness or potential longevity.  These may be wines to drink "while you're waiting for your 2015s and 16s", but they also have their own bright future ahead of them.

Yet again, the cask samples offered by Domaine Louis Jadot demonstrated excellent quality and were remarkably true to their terroirs.  Tasting dozens of freshly minted wines side by side - made in almost precisely the same way - reveals just how profound the differences are from one 'climats' to the next.  We admire Jadot for this approach.

You'll find a selection of wines which particularly stood out for us on tasting below, and a full list of wines available here.

Offered on allocation and En Primeur, wines due to land in the UK in November 2019.

Cote d'Or - Red

2017 Marsannay Clos du Roy, Domaine Gagey

Cask sample. Wild blackberry, dried prune aromas on nose, a promising start to Jadot's 2017 Cote d'Or reds!  Moderate intensity and fruit concentration, firm drying tannins giving interest and structure.  Length and 'pinosity' persists on mid palate and finish. 'Supra-generic'!  Good. RKL

£220 per 12 in bond

2017 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules, Monopole, Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

Cask sample. Complete, generous, the structure is top notch.  Quite tight at present but promises much more with bottle age.  Hedgerow fruits but with richness, some licorice and darker earthy notes.  RKL

£270 per 6 bottles in bond

2017 Chambolle Musigny Les Feusselottes 1er Cru, Domaine Louis Jadot

Cask sample. Savoury nose, smoke, weight just beginning to show through on palate.  Tannins assertive but extremely pleasant long finish.  Weighty. RKL

£345 per 6 bottles in bond

2017 Chambolle Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru, Domaine Gagey

Cask sample. Much more complexity suggested by the nose than the Feusellottes. More dark cassis and strawberry fruits.   Precise and defined, very impressive.  Both Chambolles showing as weighty, a success story in 2017. RKL

£395 per 6 bottles in bond

2017 Gevrey Chambertin Estournelles Saint Jacques 1er Cru, Domaine Louis Jadot

Cask sample. Classic Gevrey aromas, blackcurrant and cherry.  Tannins and fruit in perfect balance, spiced and with impressive fruit purity.   Shows rather better than the Lavaux St Jacques at present but doubtless the latter will show it's quality with bottle age.  RKL

£395 per 6 bottles in bond

2017 Echezeaux Grand Cru, Domaine Gagey

Cask sample. Toasted smoky aromas, sweet fruit berry notes, hard to believe contrast with some of other GC wines is purely terrroir, it's so distinct.  Intensity not yet coming through but length is notably GC level. RKL

£820 per 6 bottles in bond

2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, Domaine Louis Jadot

Cask sample.  Intensely mineral with a chalky quality to the tannins balanced on the palate by a lovely succulence to the blackcurrant and cherry fruits, with a hint of curry plant spice.  Dense and knitted together at first, but with some cedar and further spiced notes developing on second tasting.  Just lovely. RKL.

£640 per 6 bottles in bond

2017 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, Domaine Louis Jadot

Cask sample. Intensely mineral on the nose with savoury / meaty aromas and impressive weight of fruit.  Tannins are wonderfully refined, with a length which continues to evolve through the mid-palate to a complex finish, moving through 'pain d'epices' and fruit, quite wonderful. RKL

£800 per 3 bottles in bond

Cote d'Or - White

2017 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru 'Charmois' (NEW)

Impressive opening Cote d'Or wine from Jadot in 2017, wonderfully perfumed (white flowers) on the nose, with depth from stone fruits and some oak toasted notes. Palate less developed at present but the nose suggest great potential. RKL

£360 per 12 bottles in bond

2017 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes

Cask sample.  Oak has yet to fully integrate but plenty of richness on nose and palate to counterbalance it.  Full, delightful hawthorn aromas, good minerality.   Fruit concentration not evident yet but 'charming' and the acidity will allow for slow development of the fruit to gain weight in 2-3 years.  RKL

£325 per 6 bottles in bond

2017 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrieres

Tighter and less developed even than the Charmes on the nose at first, but with the intensity associated with Genevrieres showing on the palate, spiced and with complex ripe tropical fruits just beginning to peek through.  RKL

£345 per 6 bottles in bond

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru, Clos de la Garenne, Domaine Duc de Magenta

Lovely, pure and with fine 'tension' from its acidity and minerality.  Slower to evolve than the other 1er Cru Puligny, second tasting showed much finer, great elegance and concentration, 'BUY'!  RKL

£340 per 6 bottles in bond

2017 Corton Charlemagne, Grand Cru

Lots of citrus, positively rustic compared to the Chevalier!  But still with the concentration that marks out GC status, richness and muscular compared to the elegance of the Chevalier, very appealing and seems great value. RKL

£725 per 6 bottles in bond

2017 Batard-Montrachet, Grand Cru

Intense and complex, aromas of white flowers, acacia, superbly refined, but the intensity and fruit concentration give away the Grand Cru status.  Creamy textured on the mid palate and with cedar notes from oak regime, but these are carried off effortlessly. RKL

£1395 per 6 bottles in bond
