2016 Château Tour du Moulin from Vincent Dupuch

In the spring we offered you 2016 Château Tour du Moulin, extolling the beautifully rich texture of this Merlot-dominated claret from the under-the-radar but rapidly improving commune of Fronsac.  We began importing the wines from this estate after hearing about it from Denis Durantou of L'Eglise Clinet, but subsequently noticed Bordeaux expert Jane Anson had written about owner Vincent Dupuch in Decanter last year.

Described by Anson as a 'quiet magician', Dupuch is rumoured to work his magic as a consultant at a number of Pomerol properties, including Petrus, Ausone and Lafleur

When not advising these illustrious names on their vines, Dupuch works on his own small estate at Tour du Moulin, built up from just 1 ha to 8.5 ha of carefully chosen plots on the best Fronsac terroirs; Calcaire à Asteries clay and Molasses de Fronsadais limestone-clay.

The result is a wine which Anson says is "not heavy-shouldered" or "over exuberant when young", with mineral complexity.  Vibrant, bright and fresh on the nose with aromas of small red berry fruits, the 2016 is balanced beautifully by full plum fruits on the palate, showing the 81% Merlot in the blend.  The wine has yet to be reviewed widely but in other signs of it being 'discovered', Lisa Perotti-Brown MW has reviewed the 2018 vintage, finding "...vibrant notes of wild blueberries, Morello cherries and fresh black raspberries with touches of unsmoked cigars, sautéed herbs and crushed rocks" (The Wine Advocate).

At just £14.70 per bottle including VAT when you buy per dozen in bond, this is a great value claret from a brilliant vintage, with an impressive background.

Offered in bond, due to land Spring 2020, price excludes duty & VAT.

2016 Château Tour du Moulin, Fronsac AOC

Immediate and intense freshness on the nose, with bright redcurrant and hedgerow fruit aromas and very integrated oak.  The tannins take you immediately back to the UGC tastings in April '17, SO refined!  Ripe plum fruits on the palate, broad and quite plush but with the freshness continuing, provided by beautiful acidity.  Drinking 2020-2028.  RKL
